WeekendCoffeeShare #71- Come on In!

#weekendcoffeeshare

If we were having coffee this weekend, I would ask you to please come in, sit and make yourself comfortable, and before you sit down, please choose the beverage of your choice off my coffee bar. There are several types of coffee, cocoa and my favorite, a wonderful cinnamon tea.

I’d like to wish everyone hello and good wishes and thank you for joining my weekly coffee share this week. I’ve been away and haven’t participated in the weeklycoffeeshare for a long time now, but I’m glad to be back. I see many familiar faces here and some new ones. I’m looking forward to getting re-acquainted and reading everyone’s contribution this week!

Since I was last here, I took a job(s) writing freelance (and contract) for several firms including The New York Times, DotDash Meredith and Smart Asset. That was several years ago now and I had a wonderful freelance writing career. It was really an encore career since I had been a college professor for 27 years and had retired. All good things must come to an end, however, and I retired permanently in March 2022, However, just because I retired from writing commercially, doesn’t mean that I don’t want to write, so here I am back at my roots, blogging on WordPress. I’m so happy to be back and happy to see all of you!

My next venture may be a book or two. Something I have in my head that’s fiction and another non-fiction book on the area in the U.S. in which I live, Appalachia. You’ll probably hear a lot about Appalachia from me. I’m not ready to reveal all the details yet, but perhaps soon! I found out yesterday that I may have a health challenge to contend with that joins another health challenge that I’ve dealt with for years. Aren’t the Golden Years wonderful!?

I hope to spend a lot of time in the flower gardens here at my home in Kentucky, USA this summer. It was an oddly cool spring and even at the end of May, we’re having some cool weather. I’m ready for some heat and humidity! Well, maybe just heat! Summer is welcome this year after a long fall and winter of COVID-19 and the isolation that comes with it. I hope all of you have done well during the pandemic.

I also want to spend as much time with my little dog, Clara, as possible. Clara, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, is an attention hog so I’m trying to oblige her this summer. She’s 10 years old which is a pretty long life for a Cavalier.

Thank you so much for stopping by my weeklycoffeeshare today. I’ll share more and more with you as time goes on including pictures! For those of you who celebrate it, Happy Memorial Day weekend!

  1. Hi RoseMarie,

Welcome back. Your presence and visits to the coffee share were missed, but I know life happens and especially for these virtual friendships – we just have to live with the fact that folks need to come and go.
You and I may have similar ages as I too am past the age of retirement, but I’m still tinkering with my last job, trying to finish strong with a favorite project and such but also, still like the paycheck and medical benefits that keep me out of the social security nightmare.

Is this a new WP theme too? I don’t recall your previous one and may just be paying more attention to this now that I’m thinking of changing mine. If you think of it, I’d like to know what WP theme you’re using. I saw one of our peers theme and thought it might fix a couple of things I don’t like about my theme but as life with WP often goes, that I’m not paying enough for my blog site to qualify for that theme. Yours has some point that I think I like, but have not seen the perfect one yet.

Then to your point about our golden years.- whenever I’m tempted to grouse about getting old and things breaking down, I try to recall how stupid I was back when everything still worked as designed. It doesn’t resolve my dislike of my own body parts betraying me, but does switch my thoughts to how youth is wasted on the young. . .

Blessings & welcome back – always – welcome back.

  4. Hi there, nice to meet you, I’m not sure I’ve seen you in the coffee share before. I was thinking of going into freelance writing but after some research iI felt it probably was ’t for me, it seemed like to get anywhere with it, unless you have the right contacts, it seems you now have be a marketing expert, SEO expert, copywriting expert, and whatnot, and that the niches I’m interested in wouldn’t be profitable or I’d need to write in a way I don’t want to. Instead I’m going into graphic design which also requires a lot of marketing but at least it’ll be mainly for myself!

I’ll be interested to hear more about your home in Appalachia. I’m a lot about that part of US because I love and play bluegrass music, I’m learning to play the guitar and recently joined a Zoom to study the style of Doc Watson. My husband plays the mandolin and we sort of have a band together. I bet there are a lot of festivals and events in your area!

    1. I blogged a LOT here on WordPress between 2016 and 2020, then got too busy with my writing career. You’re right – you have to be a jack of all trades to write in the market these days. I’ve actually been doing it, either part-time or full-time since 1998. I’ve just retired, so I’ve come back to blogging here which I always loved. So I haven’t been on weekendcoffeeshare in a long time – but I’m back! Lol. Yes, I can see why you are interested in Appalachia if you play bluegrass. I have a bunch of Appalachian stories on my blog right now that you might find interesting. Good to meet you!
